The Catalogue

The Catalogue at launch.

Oikou’s Catalogue at launch has 13 open-source, MIT-licensed web apps for home, work and hobbies: habits, calories, training, recipes, grocery, tasks, invoices, deals, video, boards, a 3D-print queue and a collection catalogue, with Today over all of them. You add them to your Personal Cloud from its own web page, and each one gets smarter when you add another.

What is the Catalogue?

The Catalogue is where you find web apps to add to your Personal Cloud. They run on your Personal Cloud — on the computer you own — rather than on somebody else’s servers. You reach the Catalogue from your Personal Cloud’s own web page, and each app’s Catalogue page says, in plain words, what it asks to be allowed to do.

Installed apps read each other only through connections you approve: how connections work.

What does an app have to declare before I install it?

Its permissions. An app declares them when it is published, and its Catalogue page spells them out before anybody installs it:

  • the hosts on the internet it asks to reach, and that it asks to reach no others;
  • the tools on your Personal Cloud it asks to use, such as its AI or its storage;
  • whether it sends push notifications;
  • how much storage it needs on your Personal Cloud.

What does the Trusted badge mean?

That someone at Oikou has reviewed the app and the permissions it asks for. Anyone with an account can publish an app, and a new version keeps the Trusted badge only while it asks for no more than the version that was reviewed. An app without the badge is not blocked; it simply has not been reviewed.

Who can publish an app to the Catalogue?

Anyone with an Oikou account. A new app starts unlisted, visible only to the person who published it, until they choose to make it public. Each version is published once, and a version number is never reused, so an installed version always means the same thing.

Where do I find the Catalogue?

On your Personal Cloud’s own web page, which is where you add and remove web apps. The Oikou app on your phone opens the web apps you have added; it does not add them. You can also read the Catalogue’s public pages on the web.
